GYMNAST OF THE WEEK; 11.2.12

Gymnast of The Week is the special section on TWG where we celebrate some achievements in the Gymnastics week.
Last week's winner was John Orozco. Who's won this week???

She's American...

It's Briley Casanova.

The reason this upcoming talent is the winner is because she has made it too the Supergirl Classic. Few people have made it this far so it's a great achievement. Well done Briley!!!

THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY: PT. 2

You may have read the first post of the ones that got away but if not here is a quick description. It's a series where we look back on gymnasts that have unfortunately retired but brought massive talent.

GABRIELA DRAGOI (last competed; 2010)

I'm not sure where Gabi's got too but she's missing. We first so of saw her at the 2007 worlds. She brought the classic Romanian talent on beam and she had a nice floor routine. Her bars wasn't too shabby but Romanian aren't renowned bar workers. In the Olympics, she obviously won a bronze medal with her team but she also made the Beam final. Surprisingly, no other Romanian did actually compete in that final! She came in one of the lower ranks but It was still a great opportunity! I'm not sure if she went to London 2009?? But, she definitely went to the 2010 worlds. No finals but she competed bars for the team final!

ALINA KOZICH (last competed; 2009)

Alina is the star of the show in many peoples eyes in Ukranian Gymnastics. Her beautiful lines and grace made her Gymnastics career a long and successful one. Alina's strengths are probably all-around. Graceful on floor and beam, powerful on vault but I suppose bars is her weakness. In 2004, Alina went to the Olympics and made the all-around final. I remember how heart-broken I was when she fell her beam dismount! In 2005,6,7, she went to the Worlds. At the 2008 Olympics, Ukraine had a very poor show in the team qualification event. She fell and landed OOB on floor. Ukranian leader Korobchinksy sent her to Uzbekistan because he felt she'd lost it for the team. In 2009, she put on her Uzbekistani jacket and went to Worlds. She didn't compete the all-around and she didn't make finals but it was a nice elite gymnastics send-off. Since 2010, Alina has been coaching in Japan and she helps Choreo etc. with Sergei Butsula.

PART 3 IS COMING SOON!

MID-WEEK GYM NEWS

Yeshh, it's Tuesday! No where near the weekend yet!
Here is some of the intlgymnastics news hitting the planet;

WAMMES TAKES LEGAL ACTION ABOUT NOT GOING TO LONDON 2012.

Netherland's Jeffery Wammes is going to court to get an assessment about how fair it was to bump his compatriot Epke Zonderland over him to make the Olympics. Wammes scored 2 points or so higher than Zonderland but he didn't get picked. Of course, Zonderland is the more exciting of the two and could place very high on P.Bars and High Bar but Wammes also brings strong vaulting and an all-around status with him to. Follow @GYMPOWER1 for more on that

THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY: PT. 1

This is a post about some of the gymnasts that are taking long breaks or are retired!

ANA MARIA TAMIRJAN (last competed: 2009)

Tamirjan has seen it all for Romania. I'm not sure she went to the 2007 worlds but she went to the Olympics and got a team bronze medal. 2009 was her most busy year though. She went to the Jesolo competition with the team. Later, she went to the Worlds and made the all-around. Here is her vault from worlds;

ANNAMARI MAARANEN (last competed internationally; 2007)

Maaranen may be retired from International competition but she stills competes for the Denver University. Before moving to Denver, Maaranen had a very successful senior international career that dates back to 2004. She went to the 2007 worlds but unfortunately the Finnish team didn't qualify a team. Watch her competing for Denver;

DARIYA ZGOBA (last competed; 2009 worlds)

Zgoba is one of the most experienced Ukranian gymnasts in this decade. Her first internationals were around 2004/5. But, more recently, she competed in the 2007 worlds. The Ukranian gymnastics team were a lot more EXPERIENCED that quad so they managed to qualify a team. Her and Holenkova, Kozich, Koval, Prosturkina and Irina Krasninskaya all went to the Olympics.

Part 2 will be published soon.......

SORRY GUYS!

I'm ever so sorry I haven't been able to post alot lately but my life has been so hectic and frantic I don't know when too stop. Plus, Jan/Feb and March time is the relatively quite time of the season so you haven't missed out on much gymnastics action. Likewise with the twitter, I haven't been on for a long time, but I'm definitely going to get back into the swing of things.

Well, TEAM USA have proposed they'll be sending a team to the Cottbus World Cup!

Brigid McCarthy (the couch gymnast) has more on that over her blog.

Gymnastics Youtuber iLitter has created a video about all the things about the WOGA classic, including the voice overs of Rebecca Bross and Katelyn Ohashi. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnrjW9ru970&feature=g-all-lik&context=G2c379f4FAAAAAAAAAAA
